ADAS Calibration: What is it and why does it matter?

More and more cars are equipped with ADAS or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These systems rely on cameras and sensors around your vehicle to provide safety and confidence on the road. If the position of any of these sensors is off, they will require recalibration immediately.

MobileTech Auto Glass keeps this in mind when performing your windshield repairs and replacements to ensure your vehicle’s windshield and ADAS systems are in perfect harmony. Read on to learn more about ADAS calibration and why it is so important.

What is ADAS?

ADAS is a technology that is appearing on most new vehicles. ADAS systems are designed to provide driving assistance to the vehicle operator to maintain safety on the road. Often, these sensors are mounted onto the windshield to allow for surveying of the road.

These systems will scan the road for other vehicles, obstacles on the road, traffic signs, lane lines, and even pedestrians! The information is captured and monitored by the ADAS system to make response recommendations.

Common features of ADAS systems include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking assist or self-parking, adaptive headlights, and automatic headlight automation.

Types of ADAS Calibration

Depending on the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) recommendations, a vehicle may need a static, a dynamic, or a blend of calibrations.

Static ADAS Calibration

This calibration is performed on a parked vehicle with no driving necessary. This type of calibration requires an array of special tools and equipment that you a series of targets, specific to OEM standards for that vehicle, that the sensors then read in order to recalibrate the ADAS system. There are a number of factors in this approach which must be set up just right, which is why our experienced technicians are perfect for the job. ,

Dynamic ADAS Calibration

Also known as mobile calibration, dynamic ADAS calibration requires using a hand-held device we plug into your vehicle’s system. Depending on the manufacturer’s specifications, the car will have to be driven for a specific distance at a particular speed. Some vehicles only require a dynamic calibration.

Is ADAS calibration necessary?

Proper ADAS calibration is a significant matter as improper calibration can lead to failed systems. When calibrating an ADAS system, it is all about precision. Recalibration of ADAS systems tells the sensor where to look and how to respond. Every millimeter matters to ensure each system performs as intended to keep you and your passengers safe.

As you drive your vehicle, things like collisions, fender benders, repairs, and part replacements may cause these sensors to come out of alignment. Most ADAS systems come with a windshield-mounted forward ADAS camera which will require calibration after a windshield replacement.

By choosing MobileTech Auto Glass for your windshield replacement, you will be in good hands. We are equipped to recalibrate your ADAS system on-site at the time of replacement.
